Programme Overview

Composition Accelerator, P4

Programme Goals

Moving up from P3, P4 students are expected to write with more structure and advanced vocabulary.

Whereas our P3 programme focuses more on fundamental story building skills, P4 dives into more sophisticated plot devices and exam techniques.

PSLE Continuous Writing has gotten more abstract. Without proper analysis of the question, students easily write off-topic. On top of this, students are expected to write within tight time constraints in the exam.

Our proprietary FormuFlow method introduces 4 powerful Core Themes that underpin almost every PSLE question type. Our curriculum does not jump from one random topic to another every week. Rather, we teach students a flowchart system which helps them generate plot ideas and write smoothly.

By the end of a term, students should be able to come up with vivid and interesting stories in response to any composition question.

How do we achieve this?

Here is an example of a P4 Composition Accelerator lesson.

Every lesson contains these fixed elements:
    1. Learning at least one writing skill (e.g. similes, metaphors)
    2. Familiarisation with 1 out of 4 of our Core Themes
    3. A memorable and engaging activity, to reinforce learning outcomes

  • In this sample lesson, we explore the theme of Sticky Situations. This is 1 out of 4 of our Core Themes that students must master.

    Lesson Flow

    Engaging Introduction

Students explore the idea of “mischief” and what makes a climax exciting.

    Learning Outcome
Students understand what qualifies as a mischievous act and how it can drive the emotional core of a story.
    1.

Zoom In / Zoom Out Technique (Engaging Activity)

A fun, hands-on activity helps students practise how to slow down and magnify dramatic moments for narrative impact.

    Learning Outcome
Students learn to vary pacing and perspective, zooming in to dramatize a key moment, and zooming out to provide emotional context.
    2.

    Question Breakdown + Planning

Students learn how to break down the composition prompt and brainstorm a logical, compelling storyline using the Story Curve method.

    Learning Outcome
Students gain confidence in interpreting prompts and building clear, well-sequenced plot outlines.
    3.

    Writing Toolbox: Mischief Vocabulary

Students are taught precise, expressive words tied to mischief, chaos, and emotional reactions.

    Learning Outcome
Students expand their descriptive vocabulary and improve their ability to write vivid, emotionally charged scenes.
    4.

    Guided Story Planning

Using scaffolds, students plan each paragraph of their story—from setup to climax to reflection.

    Learning Outcome
Students develop paragraph-level clarity and learn to maintain story flow and structure from start to finish.
    5.

    Independent Writing Time

Students write their full story with support materials, applying the week’s techniques with teacher feedback during the process.

    Learning Outcome
Students apply targeted techniques in their own writing and begin to internalize the narrative structure and vocabulary taught.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How Is This Programme Different From Primary 3 Composition Classes?

This composition writing tuition for Primary 4 students builds on their foundational skills by introducing more advanced plot techniques, precise vocabulary usage, and exam-focused strategies. Lessons place greater emphasis on question analysis, pacing, and emotional impact, preparing students for increasingly abstract PSLE Continuous Writing prompts.

Does The Programme Help Students Manage Exam Time Pressure?

Yes. Students are trained to plan efficiently using structured story frameworks, allowing them to organise ideas quickly before writing. By practising clear planning and controlled writing within lesson time, students gradually develop the ability to complete full compositions confidently within exam time constraints.

How Does FormuFlow Support More Abstract Composition Questions?

FormuFlow teaches students to identify underlying themes rather than focus on surface details. This helps them interpret abstract prompts accurately and build relevant storylines. As a result, students are less likely to write off-topic and more able to respond thoughtfully to unfamiliar exam questions.

How Does FormuFlow Support More Abstract Composition Questions?

The programme is carefully scaffolded to support students of varying abilities. Teachers guide students step by step through planning, vocabulary selection, and paragraph development. With structured guidance and ongoing feedback, weaker writers can build skills progressively without feeling overwhelmed by higher-level writing demands.

How Does FormuFlow Support More Abstract Composition Questions?

By the end of a term, most students demonstrate clearer story structure, stronger climaxes, and more controlled language use. More importantly, they gain confidence in analysing composition questions, planning stories independently, and expressing ideas clearly and coherently under exam-style writing conditions.
